Anime Summer 2017 Overview

With the first month of the season already underway and with the arrival of many new intriguing TV series, we go through a selection of some of the most stand-out anime of Summer 2017

So, its Summer 2017. Welcome to another season of atypical sports: the anime and your summer dosage of high school rom-coms.

Now that we’re four weeks into this new season of anime, I think it’s safe to say that it’s a pretty standard haul. You have all your basic weaboo essentials continuing from the Spring 2017 line-up such as Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, One Piece and Dragon Ball Super along with a fresh batch of series to sink your teeth into.

As I have yet to completely catch up with the spring season I have decided to mention a few noteworthy shows from this seasons line-up. Most animes that have begun to air this season are typically average at best with a few gems surfacing as the summer progresses.

So, without further ado, here’s a brief look at a selection of anime commencing in summer 2017.

  1. Kakegurui

RELEASED: July 1st, 2017

GENRE: Game, Mystery, Psychological

First up is the ever-hyped Kakegurui series, being produced by Studio MAPPA which of course created the EXTREMELY popular show Yuri! On Ice in Fall 2016. Now they’re back again hoping to strike gold for a second time, only this time in the mystery-psychological genre. Essentially this anime takes place in an elite private school which focuses its curriculum on the art of gambling and the consequences of these win-lose outcomes on the players/students. I must admit, I was a little sceptical if they were going to be able to pull it off at first, but MAPPA seem to be doing a pretty good job handling it. Overall, so far, it’s a very aesthetically appealing show with a straightforward yet philosophical plot. The show is currently on a two-week hiatus, but will recommence on August 19th.

  1. Koi no Uso

Koi no uso

RELEASED: July 4Th 2017

GENRE: Drama, Romance, School

Next, we have Koi to Uso, an above-average high school romance anime centring around our protagonist Yukari Nejima who falls in love in a world where love is forbidden. If you like dramatic tales of forbidden love in a standard high school setting (classic anime), you’ll enjoy this. Also, if you did not enjoy Kuzu no Honkai - which aired in Winter/Spring 2017 - this may not be the show for you as it shares a similar, darker view of young love. However if you enjoy a more realistic, compelling tale of the complications of young people’s emotions then I’m sure this would be a entertaining watch.

  1. Gamers!

RELEASED: July 13th, 2017

GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School

Honestly, I began to watch this show simply because the ‘basic’ title appealed to the nerd within me, as It probably did to everyone currently watching this series. Gamers! Is a standard rom-com once again set in a high school setting (a trend that will probably never end) based around a group of young boys and girls who all share a common interest: you guessed it, video games. I wouldn’t say it’s the best show of this season by any means, but If you have time for an overall entertaining show despite its lack of an overarching plot then this is the show for you.

  1. Ballroom e youkoso

Ballroom E youkoso

RELEASED: July 9th, 2017

GENRE: Comedy, Sports, Drama

Oh look, another sports anime. Even more specifically than that, a sports anime based on a more unusual sport. In my opinion, this is one of the best of the bunch for the summer season of anime, which is saying something since I was initially turned off by the art style – I have since gotten used to it and even begun to appreciate its haikyuu-esque animation.

So, if you’re a fan of sports animes, or comedy anime, or naïve middle school students who take up ballroom dancing lessons you will also enjoy Ballroom e youkoso, and I would highly recommend it.

  1. Hitorijime my hero

RELEASED: July 8th, 2017

GENRE: Slice of Life, School, Shounen-ai

Being the fujoshi that I am I must give credit to the first decent Shounen ai anime to be aired in a long time (sorry to all the fans of Super Lovers, but the second season was mildly disappointing). I have been eagerly awaiting each episode every week in the hopes that It will finally show the audience what we want: the MAIN CHARACTERS. Sorry Kensuke and Hasekura, but to me you’re merely there to advance the plot and provide us with eye-candy (primarily Hasekura for the latter reason). Also, this is probably as close as you will get to confirmation that Jumin Han is gay – shout out to all the Mystic Messenger fans reading this – so although I know Shonen-ai is an acquired taste, the fujoshi/fudanshi community have finally gotten another anime to freak out over.

With regards to anime OVAs and movies, there’s plenty going on to perk up the season. Haikyuu is releasing an OVA on august 4th titled Haikyuu!!: Tokushuu! Haru-kou Volley ni Kaketa Seishun, and while although its merely going to revisit the spring tournament matches from the previous series along with interviews from some of the cast, fans of the show will lap it up. In the movie section, we have the new No Game No Life movie that everyone seems to be talking about. Titled No Game No Life: Zero, it is based around a setting as aesthetically colourful as the TV series, but occurs six thousand years preceding the anime. Of course, we’re going to see the typical ‘heartless man’s realises what love is’ trope we see in plenty of anime but hopefully it won’t reach cringe-worthy levels.

There’s plenty more movies of note being released in the coming months, and further reviews will be posted once they have been released. A complete overview of the season will be posted at the end of the Japanese summer anime season i.e. end of September. First impressions are looking up for noteworthy shows of the current season, which shine above the regular harem animes like beacons of hope.

What is your favourite anime of this season? Are there any shows you would recommend to other readers? Let us know.
