Dirty Pair: Affair on Nolandia

Being a big fan of the Dirty Pair manga by Adam Warren, I eagerly sought out the anime version of the two destructive ladies. The anime version is different than the manga, but anything with Kei and Yuri had to be good, right? Well, after watching this video, apparently not. Right from the get-go I could tell this was a rather low-budget production. The visual quality is nothing short of poor, especially with respect to other anime titles. The art is rather mundane and the animation isn't very smooth. Voice acting was surprisingly decent, though. Even though it features two of my favorite characters, Kei and Yuri, they seemed a bit watered-down compared to their other incarnations. I thought they didn't vary their temperament enough, and this left them feeling a bit hollow. And when they started frolicking on the planet? Argh! Go kill something! That's what you're paid for! As for the rest of the cast, they were pretty much one-dimensional and unimportant (although Mughi is still one of my favorite felines). Unfortunately, the story line really brought this anime down. It begins with Kei and Yuri being tasked to find a missing girl and they must travel to the planet Nolandia as a result. While the premise about Kei and Yuri trying to find a girl with mysterious powers is decent, albeit unoriginal, there is little attempt made to explain *why* the girl is so important until the end. And the revelations that were given weren't exactly inspired. This results in a story which is somewhat confusing, tedious, and complete with an anti-climatic ending. The only really decent part was the somewhat exciting chase scene near the end. Unfortunately, it took too long for that part to roll around, and by that point I had already lost interest. Even if you're a Dirty Pair fan, leave this title on the shelf and grab something else instead. The Verdict: * 1/2 (very poor)
