Macross: Clash of the Bionoids

Macross: Clash of the Bionoids is, from what I can gather, an edited version of Macross: Do You Remember Love? (aka Superdimentional Fortress Macross, aka Macross '84). With all these titles it's very easy to get confused, but all you need to know is it's the first Macross movie, and it summarizes the Macross TV series (known over here as Robotech). However, from what I've heard, about a quarter of the original was cut, including some scenes with graphic violence or nudity. Humanity, lost in deep space, is at war with the powerful race called the Zentraedi. Using their powerful Valkyrie fighters they fight back in an attempt to stave off total annihilation. The first thing I was thinking as I watched this, was how incredibly cheesy it was. Whether it was listening to the Zentraedi drone on about "pro-to-cul-ture", or trying to understand how Minmei's singing could possibly win a war, this movie brings cheese to new heights. The dramatic bits were far too corny, complete with overly melodramatic music. I didn't really care for any of the characters. Disregarding the poor voice acting, they still weren't that interesting. The little love triangle that occurs is too underdeveloped to be effective, and aside from that, there wasn't enough proper character development. The Zentraedi were simply laughable and not plausible as a frightening opponent. This movie has a reputation of being one of the worst dubs in existence. Personally, I didn't find it as bad as I thought it would be, even though the audio quality was pretty poor (it was made in 1984, after all). The voice acting wasn't overly painful to listen to (most of the time), but it was a far cry from being good. For some reason, some of Minmei's singing was dubbed in English (with horrible results), and some was left in Japanese. The only voices that were truly painful were the overly echoed, monotone ramblings of the Zentraedi. If I hear "pro-to-cul-ture" one more time... That extra half a star in the rating is for a couple of half-decent action sequences. The mecha action was pretty good, complete with the trademark Valkyrie fighters and Macross missile trails. Still, there was too little action to keep things interesting. Anyone interested in this movie should get themselves an uncut, fansubbed version. In its dubbed form, this movie is very poor. The Verdict: * 1/2 (very poor)
