Sol Bianca

Sol Bianca looked like an interesting title when I rented it. It's basically about five women, Janny, Feb, April, May, and June (no, seriously), who comprise the crew of the space craft Sol Bianca. The only thing is these five women are actually intergalactic pirates. And heck, who can resist an all-female team of space pirates? The neat thing about this movie is the basic premise. Technically, pirates are supposed to be the bad guys, right? It's not often that you'll wind up cheering for a group of intergalactic buccaneers, but I just couldn't help but root for this all-female group as they set about their task of acquiring booty. Simply put, the character designs are very well done. I liked the fact that even though this group is primarily motivated by greed, they still show a little compassion under their tough exteriors. The art and animation are standard anime fare. This title is a little older, and the visuals reflect this. However, things are generally pretty solid. Unfortunately, the weakest element in this anime is the story. It tends to follow the "little guys versus the world" formula a little too closely, as this group overcomes insurmountable odds to prevail. This may not be a bad thing, depending on your point of view, but since the characters seemed destined to succeed at everything they did, the tension level never got very high. Still, there are some decent action sequences which are pretty fun to watch, and some humorous moments on the side. Sol Bianca's not terribly original, deep, nor complex, but it provides an hour of decent entertainment. If you're looking for a "girls with guns" anime, then Sol Bianca is worth a look. The Verdict: * * * (average)
