Super-Deformed Double Feature

With all the super-deforming demonstrated in various anime, you'd think that there'd be more anime like this one. Completely super-deformed, that is. Super-deforming is usually only used for comic relief, and the two episodes on this video are anything but subtle in that department. The first parodies the making of Gall Force as though it were a live-action movie, while the second features a desert race between various characters from various anime.

If you're a fan of Gall Force, then you might enjoy the first episode somewhat. After all, out-takes are usually good for a few laughs. However, since I really didn't like the first Gall Force movie (and having not seen any others, couldn't relate to some of the scenes here), I wasn't very amused. And besides, out-takes aren't funny when they're pre-scripted. That sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

The second episode was a fair bit better, though. After all, not only were the Gall Force crew present, but also the casts of Bubblegum Crisis and Genesis Survivor Gaiarth, plus some cameos by the A.D. Police and Riding Bean characters. The whole episode is just a race through a desert, but it's so silly and fun that I chuckled on more than one occasion. Not to mention that super-deformed Nene is just so cute!

The art and animation were very plain, but considering the nature of these episodes, it really doesn't matter. After all, how much detail can an S.D. character have? There's also a few production videos included on the tape, which was a nice touch.

So while I didn't like the first episode, the second one was somewhat enjoyable. If you're a fan of Gall Force and Bubblegum Crisis, then go ahead and indulge yourself. Otherwise, you might want to watch something else.

The Verdict: * * 1/2 (below average)
